Chael Sonnen-Jason ?Mayhem? Miller take aim at each other on Twitter

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Chael Sonnen doesn’t tend to let a fight – physical or verbal – go without getting in his fair share of blows. After making some remarks concerning Alistair Overeem and his failed drug test for elevated levels of testosterone over the weekend, Sonnen was verbally attacked by Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Apparently, like many fans, Miller [...]

UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos took to his Twitter account this morning to discuss the current Alistair Overeem/failed drug test situation and let it be known that earned what he has without ever using PED's:<Br><Br>

"I am professional and I'm champion without ever having used anything for better performance when you guys see me fighting that's really me. About what happened to Overeem I don't know anything more than you guys know and for me It's between him and the Nevada Athletic Commission. I know a lot about me that's it! I'm doing my whole training camp to fight against Overeem!"<br><Br>

The chances of Overeem being able to fight on May 26th are pretty slim so who do you think the Champ should be preparing for?<Br><Br>

Rashad Evans turns down request to sign picture of him getting knocked out

Posted by on Apr 10, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

UFC light heavyweight contender Rashad Evans turned down a fan for an autograph in a video uploaded over the weekend.

Can you blame him? Though Evans has a stack of signature cards on the table, the fan wants him to sign this:

It’s from his one loss. In that bout, Evans lost the UFC light heavyweight belt to Machida by knockout. It’s a bad memory, and he does not want to be reminded of it as he prepares to try to get that title back from Jon Jones at UFC 145.

Though Evans is often booed by fans, he still rarely turns down an autograph. In an interview with Cagewriter in 2010, he talked about it.

“If they didn’t boo me, that would be strange. It’s funny, I’ll sign autographs all day, and everyone’s my number one fan. Then they’ll show me on the screen, and I’ll get booed. I think, ‘I just signed a million autographs. Who is booing me?’”

He can bet that one fan he turned down is joining in the boos, but since he was carrying around a picture of Evans getting knocked out, he wasn’t much of a fan in the first place.

Thanks, Middle Easy.

Weekend warriors: Amoussou, Rickels stand out at Bellator and Iaquinta wins on TUF

Posted by on Apr 9, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Join Cagewriter for a look around the MMA world’s weekend happenings.

Amoussou, Rickels shine at Bellator

Karl Amoussou moved on to the Bellator welterweight semifinals with a rear naked choke just two minutes into his bout with Chris Lozano. David Rickels wasted no time, knocking out Jordan Smith in just 22 seconds. Ben Saunders tried every submission in the book, but couldn’t finish Raul Amaya on the way to a unanimous decision win. Bryan Baker, who was once a finalist in the Bellator middleweight tournament, won a less-than-thrilling split decision over Carlos Pereira.

Al Iaquinta stops Team Cruz

On “The Ultimate Fighter,” Team Faber was in desperate need of a win. It came in the form of a three-round split-decision win over Myles Jury. Both Jury and Iaquinta were supposed to appear on earlier seasons of TUF, but injuries kept them off the show.

In their bout, Jury started strong with kicks in the first round. He tried for a choke late in the round, but couldn’t secure it. Iaquinta pressed forward in several exchanges as he took a close second round. Since they were tied after two, Iaquinta and Jury went to a third round. Iaquinta came on strong in the third round, swarming Jury with strikes as he pushed ahead to win the final round.

With that, Team Faber won their first bout of the season and the next fight pick. On Friday, Michael Chiesa will represent Team Faber against Jeremy Larsen of Team Cruz.

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: GSP, Aldo Miss a Chance to Move Up

Posted by on Apr 8, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

by Michael David Smith
Heading into UFC 129, I thought both welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and featherweight champion Jose Aldo had a good chance of putting on the kind of performance that would move them up in the pound-for-pound rankings.

GSP did what he usually does and won a dominant unanimous decision over a good opponent in Jake Shields, but he didn’t do anything that makes him leapfrog Anderson Silva at the top of the list. And Aldo won a classic battle with Mark Hominick, but it wasn’t the kind of transcendent performance that could put him on top of the MMA world.

So as we review the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts, there’s no change at the top.

To aid title quest, UFC 148′s Michael Bisping chose Tim Boetsch over Cung Le

Posted by on Apr 8, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

When it comes to his immediate fighting future, Michael Bisping has an admittedly one-track mind.

After winning “The Ultimate Fighter 3,” picking up a dozen UFC victories over the past six years, and recently falling just short to now-top contender Chael Sonnen in his most recent bout, Bisping is focused on getting a title shot – and little else.

That’s why he chose Tim Boetsch instead of Cung Le as his next opponent.

Weekend Warriors: Bellator?s lightweight final four emerges and Lawrence advances on TUF

Posted by on Apr 8, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Welcome to another edition of weekend warriors, your rundown of what happened while you were watching the state of Kentucky break out in a war over a round, orange ball.

Bellator got to its lightweight final four. Watch the recap video above of Lloyd Woodard’s fantastic win over Patricky Freire. (Seriously. It’s worth your seven minutes.) Rick Hawn, an Olympic judo player, showed off striking skills with a TKO halfway through the first round. Brent Weedman advanced to the semifinals with a second-round submission of J.J. Ambrose. Thiago Michel rounds out the field after a split decision win over Rene Nazare.

TUF Awkwardness

This week’s episode of “The Ultimate Fighter” started with last week’s awkward fight pick. Since Dominick Cruz’s team won the first fight, he had the next fight pick. When given the chance, he picked Justin Lawrence, the no. 1 pick from his own team. But he didn’t name an opponent. Instead, Cruz asked Urijah Faber who he wanted to face Lawrence.

Put on the spot, Faber didn’t have an answer, and no one from the team raised his hand to fight. Yikes. Cruz finally picked Cristiano Marcello, the experienced BJJ specialist who trained at Chute Boxe in Brazil.

Team Faber had good reason to be concerned, as Lawrence stopped Marcello in the second round. A push kick to the abdomen in the first round knocked Marcello down, but Marcello was effective in pushing the fight. His success was short-lived. Midway through the the second round, Lawrence threw a big left and ended the fight.

The second win for Team Cruz gave them another fight pick. Myles Jury from Team Cruz will take on Al Iaquinta from Team Faber.

Jon Jones says Rashad Evans is out for a ?rude awakening? at UFC 145

Posted by on Apr 7, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

One point light heavyweight contender Rashad Evans has consistently made during the build up to his much-anticipated bout against Jon Jones at UFC 145 relates to the way he used to handle ?Bones? in training sessions when the two were teammates at Greg Jackson?s gym in New Mexico. Rather than be annoyed by Evans? assessment, [...]
